Katie and Marsha, There are two electrodes, anode (positive, + ) and cathode (negative, -). The anode turns black (emits silver into the water) and should be left alone, the cathode turns grey (attracts silver from the water, and grows whiskers) and should be wiped clean every so often, especially if you are using an uncontrolled generator of greater than about 15V.
My opinion is that you will make better quality CS by using a single, or perhaps two 9V batteries, rather than three.
