If the swelling involves the nose, for instance, rhinoplasty, it can take up to a year for all of the swelling to go down. That's without any kind of infection. I had some surgery which involved my nose and my doctor advised me to ice my nose many times during the first day. It really did help. I can't imagine what I would have looked like if I hadn't. So don't worry about the swelling, it is very common and it will eventually go down. The swelling doesn't mean it is infected. I hope your son feels better.
