Of course in Oz should something like that happen - they simply launch a media blitz against the person, white-ant their party and when all else fails, despite the candidate getting more votes than the combined total of all the other parties, simply re-write the rules ( called a gerrymander- officially!) and there is no way that even a majority vote can work.
