I doubt whether the hydronium ions are energised in some way, there are so few of them in pure water... perhaps in the electrolysis of the water the hydroxyl portion arrange themselves adjacent to the silver ions leaving a surfeit of H+ for the pH meter to measure. Ivan: Does not your explanation increase the polarity of the hydrated water molecules (for want of a better term) and increase the activity coefficient (and consequently, the activity) of the hydrogen ions?
