I doubt whether the hydronium ions are energised in some way, there are so few of them in pure water... perhaps in the electrolysis of the water the hydroxyl portion arrange themselves adjacent to the silver ions leaving a surfeit of H+ for the pH meter to measure. Ivan: Ah yes, back to my old chestnut. Pure water will have no more hydroxyl ions than hydronium ions. So there is equal likelihood of having associations between statically charged CS and either of these two ions. After months of on and off discussion and suggestions as to what species could be lowering the pH, and then determining that such species were essentially absent, it is highly unlikely that there is something else in my HVAC CS water that is lowering the pH. Since a pH meter is a DIRECT measurement of hydronium ion ACTIVITY NOT CONCENTRATION, and the fact that no other species is present in high enough concentration to lower the pH by itself, we are left with two possibilities: Possibility #1: The CS itself is polarizing the water molecules which results in a higher activity coefficient of the hydronium ions. However, this conclusion does not fit well for two reasons. First, I have seen pH measurements of 4 - 4.5 for CS concentrations in my HVAC product of only 1 PPM. So there does not appear to be enough CS present to polarize sufficient water molecules to lower the pH to 4 - 4.5. Second, high quality LVDC CS (clear product with only a slight Tyndall) does NOT exhibit a significant reduction in pH. Possibility#2: The high voltage itself (~10,000 VAC) has lowered the pH. I believe we are left to conclude that the water has been restructured, and that we should consider designing experiments to further substantiate this tentative conclusion. Thus, my interest in electrolyzed water. Roger -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver.
