Iodine toxicity can result from an intake of 2.0 mg of iodide per day. The toxicity results in impairment of the creation of thyroid hormone, resulting in lower levels of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream. The thyroid gland enlarges, as a consequence, and goiter is produced. This enlargement is also called hyperthyroidism. Goiter is usually caused by iodine deficiency. In addition to goiter, iodine toxicity produces ulcers on the skin. This condition has been called "kelp acne," because of its association with eating kelp, an ocean plant, which contains high levels of iodine. Iodine toxicity occurs in Japan, where large amounts of seaweed are consumed. --- source: http://www.herbaldave.com/Supplements/Minerals/Iodine.htm Too much iodine (1.5-250 mg/day) can inhibit thyroid gland hormone synthesis. This is especially true for individuals with borderline hypothyroidism. [Paul T, et al., The effect of small increased in dietary iodine on thyroid function in euthyroid subjects, Metabolism 37, 121-124, 1988] [Chow CC, et al., Effect of low dose iodide supplementation on thyroid function in potentially susceptible subjects. Are dietary iodide levels in Britain acceptable?, Clin Endocrinol 34:413-416, 1991] When there is excess iodine, the thyroid initially absorbs more iodine from the blood. Within weeks, however, the concentration levels out and hormone synthesis remains constant. When the blood plasma levels of iodine 20-35 mcg/dl, thyroxine synthesis ceases, but adaption results in normal hormone synthesis within weeks. In cases of hyperthyroidism, doses as small as 1 mg result in cessation of hormone release and significant amelioration of thyrotoxicosis symptomatology. [The Nutrition Desk Reference] Too much iodine (> 2,000 mcg/day) can result in eruption of acne-like skin lesions. [Hitch JM, Acneform eruptions induced by drugs and chemicals. JAMA 200:879-880, 1967] Iodine in excess of 4.5 mg/day produces a metalic taste and sores in the mouth, swollen salivary glands, diarrhea, and vomiting. --- While in the military I was repeatedly told that if possible I should limit my consumption of iodine (for water purification) to no more than 3 consecutive weeks. YMMV! Regards, George Martin On Thu, 14 Sep 2000 08:38:08 EDT, [email protected] wrote: =>Because we are constantly exposed to parasites through food, water and air =>and it's an ongoing battle.
