The iron can react with oxygen in the air and produce rust. Take a glass of the water and let stand undisturbed for about 8 hours. If the stuff falls out and the water clears, it is most likely rust, if not, then it is not rust. Or filter it, rust will filter out, something disolved in the water will not.
