Hello all, I've just completed some final tweaking of the list filter rules and demonstrated successful filtering of executable attachments from several test messages.
There is *NO* guarantee that the filtering will work in every case, or that there isn't still some gaping hole in the code I installed. Please continue to be careful of opening any attachment you receive in e-mail, from the list or elsewhere. Configure your e-mail software *NOT* to automatically open or "preview" such attachments, if possible. If it is *not* possible with your e-mail program, consider changing to a different one that is more secure. Install virus scanning software and keep it current. No one here need feel guilty, nor hostile towards anyone other than the perpetrators of the virus. We were all victimized by this situation. The MTX trojan and virus that we encountered is not even a particularly nasty example of the breed. There was nothing to stop them reformatting hard disks, broadcasting personal data everywhere, or any other sort of mischief. In this sense, I think we were lucky. It forced me, finally, to update the protective measures for the list. This required me to learn a whole 'nuther slug of arcane UNIX stuff, which I'm sure will only serve to make me even more intolerable at cocktail parties. I apologize once again that we had to suffer such an attack in order to get me to tighten security. I've heard from most of those whose machines were infected that they've managed to disinfect their systems. Anyone who has not been able to repair their system, please let us know so we can assist you as much as we can (hopefully not re-infecting us in the process!). Any messages that you sent to the list in the last two days have not been forwarded. There were probably a couple dozen that came through. Please re-post them when you get the chance. I will also be going through the stack of sub/unsub requests that came in and were not processed while the list was down. I'm immensely relieved to put the silver-list back into operation. The responsibility I feel towards you all was never revealed as starkly as when I turned it off in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
