It's no problem, IMO, to fall asleep while using the zapper.  That is,
there's no side effect with using it longer than 7 minute stretches.
The only problem I can see is that he wouldn't be getting good contact
with the wands for a full 7 minutes (although 5 minutes is probably
enough).

A surge arrester wouldn't hurt.  But most zappers, those using a 555
timer IC, would internally short before any high voltage got through
to the wands.  The same is true of the fully electronic blood
electrifier circuits I've seen (but NOT true of Beck's original
design, nor is it true of Tom Miller's bio-electrifier).
