Actually, it is about 300 times sweeter than sugar.
Expensive yes, about $66.00 a lb,. at my local health food store.
But bought a few ounces at a time. Very reasonable.

You can't directly substitute it for sugar.

Actually, you can!!!
1 tsp of Stevia extract powder substitues for the sweetness of 1 c. sugar. ( I
actually use slightly less than 1 tsp SEP for 1 c. sugar.)
You then decrease the liquid slightly in the recipe. (dissolved sugar increases
the liquid content)

If you had one trial with Stevia it is best to try again. Some brands, makers,
have more of an herbal taste than others.

The best way to sweeten, cup of tea, coffe etc. Is to take the Stevia extract
powder, mix 1 tsp of the powder with 3 tbls. of purified water in a dropper
bottle. Just a drop or two of this will sweeten your cup.

I have a Stevia cookbook....picked up recently at the HFS.
