I used it topically when the outbreak occured that one time. Otherwise I take about 1 oz per 100 pounds per day of 5ppm CS, divided into two doses about 12 hours apart. Several times I would feel a burning, like I was about to get an outbreak, and would take some tissue and apply CS to the area for several minutes. I would not get an outbreak, but don't know if I was mistaken about getting one, or if it actually stopped one. But the oral preventative seems to be very effective for me.
