Ivan: The fact that these coins lose weight over time plus the huge difference in reaction time between a solid/liquid interfacial reaction and a monophasic reaction between silver ions (which corrode into the liquid medium) and pathogens within the same liquid medium lends support, IMO, to the latter mechanism and the important role of silver IONS in providing germicidal protection.
