I believe that HIV is a common virus, which most people simply do not get. If you have a highly suppressed immune system, then you can get HIV from sexual contact, or from vectors (biting insects) as happens in Africa, where their immune systems are suppressed or overloaded by parasites. But in this country the majority of immune suppression is from poisons in our air, water and food, a primary culprit is benzene, which is used in the lubricant that gay men use, and was in the antiparasite treatment that the Haitians received upon entry to this country, the two two big groups to have AIDS.
HIV is opportunistic, it is, I believe a good marker for AIDS, since it can only infect a person who is near having AIDS, but I do not believe it causes AIDS. >From what I have read, those who take anti HIV drugs cut their life far short from those who do not. Thing is, a big percentage of people who have AIDS are HIV negative, and many who have HIV never get AIDS unless they take HIV drugs (which themselves cause AIDS, ie. immune system destruction).
