Your bout at Radio Shack w their qualified in house shoe 
salesman sounds typical.

If you carefully read the motor pkg label it will show a 
[very ] brief statement of rated current on the order of 
an amp.  This is normally taken to mean full load 
current draw which occurs at rated load speed & 
sometimes isn't listed.

If you use a pot to control from a 12Vdc source & no 
series dropping resistance, you can easily exceed the 
power rating at near the lower pot stop.  You'll know 
about it when it goes SST & stinks.  Can kill a supply 
if it is less than 1A rated; plug in the wall units have 
NO overload protection.
