On July 11th, the US House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations Bill that calls for a one-year moratorium on genetically engineered (GE) Fish. The FDA is now reviewing an application for the first gene altered fish, a fast-growing salmon. But there are no federal laws that specifically govern the regulation of GE fish. The FDA is treating this GE salmon as a new animal drug rather than a food product. A fish is a complete organism, not a drug, and should not be approved on this narrow, unscientific basis.
