Elaine, I've used cs for stys several times by applying directly into the eye using an eye dropper. Upon initial application, the discomfort (itching and redness) begins to be alleviated almost immediately. I then applied drops again several hours later and again the next morning upon awakening. In all three cases it appears that the third application wasn't necessary because there was little evidence of the sty the next day.
I also added a small amount of salt until the drops no longer stung when placed directly in the eye. This caused no apparent change in the effectiveness of the (estimated) 10 ppm brew... As another point, some medical workers in the Philippines that I introduced CS to have also had fantastic results treating red-eye (conjuctivitus) but it takes numerous applications over 2 or 3 days to clear up. For established cases they use an eye cup to ensure prolonged contact with the eye. Of course it is important to begin treatment at the earliest sign of affliction so YMMV (your mileage may vary!).
