Hi Elaine, A friend of mine named Jackie gets a sty about twice a year. She applies CS with a Q-tip directly to the sty several times a day. Sty goes away within a day. The pain also stops at the first application. The sty is a plugging up of a sebaceous gland at the margin of the eyelid, however, we also consider the pimple under the eyelid a sty. The etymology of the word sty is interesting. Starting out as "styanye" (which was understood to mean sty on eye), becoming stye and now just sty. The sty begins as a pimple and then becomes infected by a pathogen of the cocci, the one species in particular is "Staphylococcus aureus", which is also responsible for boils and other skin eruptions. The number of bacteria on the skin is tremendous, from 2.4 million bacteria per square centimeter in the axilla (armpit) and groin, to as low as 314 per square centimeter on the back.
