But the phthalate is bound much more tightly to polyethylene than to PVC. In PVC, the binding is very loose -- almost like a solid solution. That's why it can leach out of PVC. (There are other plastics, such as polypropylene (5 - PP), vinyl (3 - V) and some polycarbonates that aren't good for long-term food storage, either.
