I know I've seen what Judy is talking about. It's natural for the old-timers to get a bit tired of repeating the same answers again and again. There've been times when the response was a gruff, "Look in the archives!" Believe it or not.
But you're both right that the archives are a useful resource that everyone should be encouraged to use. It's just that they will not replace a guiding hand and the feeling that you're being heard. The well rounded approach you describe is a good one, Roger. Answer as best you can, then guide them to the archives. Perhaps even dig up an archive reference or two or suggest some search terms!
