I think I've gotten my best results dumping a quart or so of CS into the base when the tree is first set up then filling with water the rest of the way. That initial slurp (after cutting off the bottom few inches of the trunk to get a fresh cut surface) assures the CS infuses itself throughout the tree. That seems to inoculate it against decay and keeps it drinking and drinking about forever.
Maybe if I think of it I'll dump some more in at some point, but if it works right at the start, I don't think that would even be required. Not really precise, I know. Of course I'm making my own CS for cheap, so don't be surprised by the quantity I'm using. Same thing works with cut flowers too, of course. Incredible.
