Robb, Arthritis is the inflammation of a joint; osteoarthritis is the degenerative type of chronic arthritis. Any long term arthritis becomes chronic. The book The Arthritis Cure by Theodosakis, Adderly and Fox speaks about osteoarthritis - the chronic degenerative form..
It also suggests that the greatest damage is done by free radicals and suggests a change in diet so that adequate anti-oxidants are consumed ACES Vitamins A, C and E plus selenium. Another interesting suggestion is that we should follow the Japanese recommended diet and eat 30 different foods a day ( - and not 30 different junk foods!) Dr Batmanghelidj's book "Your Bodies Many Cries For Water"discusses rheumatoid arthritis (this is the chronic form of joint inflammation, and often accompanied by joint deformities etc) He suggests the cause to be chronic dehydration which can lead to osteoarthritis [p45]. Form the diagrams he presents it would appear that both forms are present. However, friends who have one or other form that take the glucosamine/chondroitin mix report great pain relief after only a few days. I have one friend in particular with deformed joints that vouches for that.
