  If the batteries are connected in series,  the voltage ADDS.

  Connect the positive from battery 1 to the negative of battery 2.

Then..... connect the positive from battery 2 to the negative of battery 3.

Now you have only a negative from battery 1, and a positive from battery 3 available.

These two terminals will read 27 Volts. This applies to all batteries, and even to power supplies.

If you parallel battery terminals, you will have addition current, but still the same voltage. ( connect all Positive Terminals together, and connect all negative terminals together )

For example, if you have 4 each 12 volt 10 amp hour batteries, and you connect them in parallel,
you will have 12 Volts and 40 amp hours available.

One should try to obtain a basic understanding of all this in order to become flexible in the art of making CS.

Yes, you can use your automobile battery. You could connect the Negative from your car to the positive of your motorcycle, and have 24 volts DC.

I have a large number of all sorts of batteries sitting on a bench. Some are very small 12 Volt batteries.
I can connect these in most any fashion, and get up to 100 VDC.
