The voltages can be different, if the hardware on hand happens to be different.

They could be 6, 12, 18, and 24. If the "rules of order" are followed, all electronics will behave nicely.

The same is true for batteries, if connected in series. Not SO for connecting in parallel. Of course for
CS applications, there is little need to make any parallel connections.

In one system I installed years ago, I had one wire that was Positive DC, Negative DC ( from another power supply ) and was also ONE SIDE of a low voltage AC supply. So here we had a common wire for 3 different voltages.

That..... confused even me, for a short period. After I analyzed the concept, I could see that everything was according to the "rules of order".
