Wherever do you get that idea?
When I made that statement, I did not mean for a specific application
such as brewing CS. Instead I was speaking from a purely technical standpoint.
What kind of "quality" are you referring to in DC
power?
Quality as in PURE DC, with ZERO ripple. The best power supplies can in
fact come close to the Pure DC delivered by batteries.
This is more important in analog and digital circuits, and solid state
switching circuits, ect. The computer on my desk has one of the best power
supplies I have seen for this purpose. Now it has over 51,000 hours on it.
Often the power blinks and my computer does not even reboot.
The 5 volt output is good for 35 amps. The brand name is "PC Power and
Cooling". When it was new, it was the top of the line. It is so good,
that about every 1.5 to 2.0 years, I open it up and clean it very thoroughly.
The 51,000 hours is about 8 years continuos running. I added the hour meter
and a digital temp meter when I first put this computer on my desk about 10
or 11 years ago.
If it was a mickey mouse model that cost $ 20.00 or less, I would not go to
the trouble. Now one can buy a power supply and case for about $
25.00. Howver you need to wear leather gloves to work on them. This keeps
you from cutting your hands on the cheap metal work. Typically I pay 15 to
25 $$ more so I don't have to wear leather gloves. <grin>

advantage whatsoever to using batteries instead of
adapters, except for portability (camping out in the
woods).
Of course I agree with you, 100 %.
The only variation in the "quality" of DC power would
be a fluctuation in voltage.
True, for CS brewing, no problem. Again, I was talking power supplies
for whatever purpose, not for
only brewing CS.
As you and others have stated, virtually any old power supply or voltage
source will do just fine.
Relative to batteries, ( rechargeable ones ) I just counted 19 units
sitting on one end of my work bench.
Every time I walk by, I move the alligator clips to a different one in an
effort to keep them all fully charged.
About every two months, I give away from 10 to 20 to my friends. These are
recycled batteries that have been removed from various equipment. The amp
hour capacity is not what it was when they were new.
For most purposes, they are totally acceptable. I keep a 250 Watt inverter
in my truck that will run a full sized computer and my blender when I am
camping or hunting. Lots of uses for batteries these days.
