Dear Leacy, I'm going to step in here and tweak what the others have been saying to you. We depend on Bob and Solar and Chuck and all the others here for their patient and generous gifts to the list, but I think they get tired sometimes or forget what it was like getting started.
You're doing a good job and you'll get it down pat in a very short time. You do *NOT* need to worry quite so much about what you're doing for the simple reason that there is little risk of harm. You should know that even though we do not recommend using any kind of salt as starter any more, *PLENTY* of us, including me, started out that way and had success with what we produced. Your product so far is not garbage, and is acceptable for external applications and household use. Taking some internally certainly won't do you any measurable harm and will probably help. *Maybe* it might not be good for inhalation, but such cautions are of the "better safe than sorry" sort and not based on direct study. Go ahead and make some "better" CS, but don't think you've failed! The path to making good CS is not so narrow as you're being told. When you get there it won't matter what things you tried and discarded along the way. A couple of tips, in case they'll help: When you start another batch with only distilled water, it will, of course, take a lot longer to get going. By the time you see the electrodes discoloring and a bit of foamy or fluffy stuff depositing on the negative electrode, you'll know things are going along well. You won't even see bubbles or a cloud of particles. It's a lot less exciting to watch than when you're using salt! Be sure to wipe off that fluffy stuff occasionally and not to stir it into the water. If a little bit shakes off when you handle the electrodes to wipe them off, just let it settle in the bottom and pour off the clear part when you're done and discard the last bit that has the sludge. There's usually no need to filter it or anything. Keep asking your questions and keep studying and experimenting. You're making swift progress.
