Adding a bit to this, I recall Becker describing a woodsman who had crushed his leg terribly. It was to be amputated but the patient refused. Gangrene was setting in. Becker, if I recall, used a sheet of silver and also the current, and was astounded by the results -- rapid healing of the bone and leg, which had seemed ruined beyond any healing. It's quite a remarkable and inspiring section.
Becker claims that the use of silver in wounds goes back quite a long time before his studies; its not fresh in memory, but I believe he describes uses by British doctors in WWI. Remarkable and inspiring book. NB Becker's first mentor had has lab equipment tossed out on the street by the university. Science and academic politics are brutal.
