If you're going to do it that way, here's a couple of hints to make it
better.
If you do see golden whisps rather than white ones, remove a battery or
move the electrodes further apart.

Get a cheapo digital multimeter and a potentiometer [5 to 10 k ohms should
do OK] and hook it up in series with one electrode [cost as little as $8].
Keep the current down to around 1 milliamp or under by twisting the knob on
the potentiometer and quit when the voltage [measured with parallel hookup]
reaches some point that yields results you like. [2 multimeters makes it
easier...voltage and current can be monitered at the same time with no
disassembly/reassembly]
 Stir [gently to avoid dislodging deposits] before taking readings taking
care to not reposition the electrodes.

Pay attention and that setup will do as well as the best automatic
generators that do all that for you.
