So could 1 g of silver over a lifetime be considered safe..
The NOAEL is just another way of saying, 'we don't know anything but if
you don't exceed this level, you'll be safe and if you do..and experience
difficulties, we get to say "I tole you so and our asses are covered''.
[beurocrospeak from the Butt Covers division of the NRI department...no
real information]
Getting shot in the foot with a BB gun says nothing about surviving
being shot in the head with a cannon...or, glancing off a car is safer than
a head on collision? Well, DUH!
The NOAEL statement is like the FDA saying "Not proven safe and effective",
which does NOT mean 'proven unsafe and ineffective'.
"If you are not for us, you are against us" does not mean the same thing
or have the same effect in practice as "If you are not against us, you are
for us."
The question isn't what level of total lifetime intake is considered safe
[that's easy!] , it's what level is considered harmful.
That could well be over 1000 grams over a lifetime considering normal
elimination rates , how long somebody lives, how fast they take it in any
given time span and probably a hundred other considerations specific to
the individual. [that's a lot harder, maybe impossible to quantify, but
it's the only statement that would have any real meaning]
On the basis of present epidemiological and pharmacokinetic
knowledge....
[means they have very little knowledge or they would say something that
actually means something. ]
7. Conclusions
Argyria has been described in syphilitic patients in poor health who were
therapeutically dosed with a total of about 1 g of silver in the form of
silver arsphenamine together with other toxic metals. There have been no
reports of argyria or other toxic effects resulting from the exposure of
healthy persons to silver. [sez, basically..that virtually all of the above
article is irrelevent]
From what I gather from the article, all they can tell us is that
completely unreasonable doses over a fairly short period of time can be
moderately harmful for some people especially if they are taking something
that possibly contains arsenic or have abnormal selenium levels.
What they don't say, where it applies specifically to listers making 5 to
25 PPM silver water, is that you'd die of water toxicitity long before
experiencing problems from the silver in it.
Someone on this list mentioned that you would have to drink 50 gallons a
day [don't recall the PPM or timespan of days] to reach any sort of harmful
level of silver retention. [but the 50 gallons of water is certain death on
the first day]
