Dear Christiane,

<<Absolutely agreed, Versed can be a very dangerous sedation. However, I
was
referring to oral (not IV) versed, given in a clinical hospital setting, in
a room equipped with a respirator and an anesthesiologist. Depending on the
child, catheterization can be VERY scary and traumatizing, and in those
cases, I have seen versed to be very helpful.>>

** The monograph on oral Versed (liquid) reads exactly the same as the IV
one I provided. I understand your concerns but I have to be really honest
here. I'd much rather risk my child being frightened than take the chances
on a drug like Versed that had enough severe adverse reactions, including
death, to warrant an FDA Black Box Warning. But please understand, this is
my opinion. You or others may disagree.

I would think it would be scarier yet to experience something and yet
have no memory of it when you KNOW you were going to experience something.
I also am concerned about the effects of a substance like this on the
immature, developing brain of a child.

<< I have worked hard to gain my
daughters trust through all these invasive procedures she has had in her
short life, and she knows I will always be honest with her about what's
going to hurt, taste bad, pinch, etc.........and have always supported her
in screaming or squeezing tight if she needs to get through the pain. I'm
blessed that I have been able to teach her these other coping skills, and we
have been able to stay away from "pre-sedation" with versed, but I believe
that has come from structure and lots of experience......which most people
don't have . It's very scary for a 6 year old, who has never been
hospitalized, to lay on a cold table with a big machine over their head, and
have a catheter put in their urethra......even if mom and dad are right
there holding thier hands and supporting them. in such cases, versed
removing the memory can be beneficial.>>

** Honestly, I think it is okay for a child or person to be frightened.
We have a habit, in the American culture, of trying to remove all
unpleasantness. We're so committed to doing this that we will give a
dangerous drug like Versed to accomplish it.

** You won't find a supplement that will go to the extremes of Versed
but
magnesium works well to relax. It also relaxes muscles. If I wanted to use
a pharmaceutical I'd go with a much milder one.

<<On a little side note, I had a funny dream last night. I was running into
the bank, and saw an old van with a logo and phone number on it for
"Catherine Creel, and Malcolm Stebbins....treat from the street". I was
stunned and searched for you...........ultimately finding you sitting
together over a cup of coffee and donuts at Dunkin Donuts. So very odd how
the brain works..........and yes......very broken sleep last night with my
ill daughter.......amazing the dreams that come out of sleep deprivation.>>

** That's a pretty amusing dream. Malcolm, did you take notes? I forgot
what we talked about. Darn! We probably solved all the previously unsolved
medical
mysteries ;-)

Regards,
Catherine

Any suggestions for feeling well rested on little sleep????  ~:-}
