Hi Sharon;
Catherine is probably the person to talk to on the drug safety issue; CCreel, you can find her email and/or website by going through the silver list archives, as addressed at the bottom of most messages. I think she was the person who posted the contra-indications on Versed - seriously bad. There's no need for something as heavy as Ver{i?}sed, there are milder tranks, and coupled with a local topical anaesthetic on the cath and a mirror so she can watch and some discussion to make it interesting it just MIGHT be possible to pull it off. I know that's sort of a long shot, but for what it's worth, I cath myself several times a day every single day of my life - and I'm not dead from the waist down. Familiarity breeds contempt, I s'pose. If there is any way you could get hold of a disabled (Spinal Cord Injured) group or person, perhaps some kind woman who does intermittent self-cathing would be willing to let DD see the procedure so it wasn't such an unholy terror; Most SCI's can remember the fear of our initial cathings! "You just Don't Do that!!!"

I'm afraid that drugs like Versed (I'm not sure how it's spelled either) become popular because they are pushed by the Pharm. reps., articles are published in anaesthesia journals extolling the way they address the last 'drug of preference's' dangers or shortcomings, and the patents just never run out. Almost universally these new confections offer ease, flexibility and cover-your-ass mutual approval for the doctor, and the patient takes the hindmost. Who the hell knows what the side effects of these things are, they're monkeying with the brain as if it were a drinking fountain; turn the knob, see if that's enough, watch the dials . . . after all, they're "just" wiping her memory, what does that mean?

I'm obviously grouchy, biased and unqualified to offer professional medical judgement. I'm really sorry that Dr. Jacobs is no longer taking patients, though I thought he had a protege. Could be worth checking out. They have been pretty successful in treating persistent (resistant?) UTI's. Perhaps Catherine can offer some accepted alternatives to Versed, give you at least a few words to say.

Ask your doc, what are the plans if they find "this" or "that", after all, what are they going to do about it when they know what "it" is?? And go shopping for consults out of the area. (Of Mutual Influence.) I know you're up against the wall in terms of needing to do something for her, and you're prob'ly run pretty ragged, so urging you to do yet more may seem a pretty wrong and insensitive thing to do. But something doesn't quite add up here for me; it may be just my response to your disquiet, (and hey, you did ask,) but the paradigm you're involved in doesn't seem to sit well with you.

I've made myself late,
Take care,  Malcolm

Hi all,

Some of you may remember that we've been fighting my dd's recurrent bladder infections off and on for a while now. Previously there was discussion of all the procedures that the "allopathic" Docs wanted to do. Since the CS hasn't been working for her to keep the infections at bay we've decided to go along with the Allopathic tests... She's already had the ultrasound. Doc suspects reflux and claims he can see some limited kidney damage. Next up is the VCUG. I remember there was discussion of the particular drug recommended for sedation for this procedure being somewhat dangerous. I am trying to decide whether to give it to her. Does anyone remember what drug it was? They are proposing to give her something called verised. I made the nurse spell it so I could look it up. When I try to search pub med I get nothing, so something is off. Can anyone help me with the correct spelling? Or info on this drug? Or tips to make the whole catheterization process easier??? I hate to do this but we feel quite backed into a corner. We've exhausted all our other options.
Thanks in advance!
Sharon Cooper
