It's a standard precaution to do this against possible terrorist contamination of large public water supplies... Here in Rhode Island, We have the Scituate Reservoir. The water quality was very good, prior to The Sept/11 Terrorist Attacks, but now I can literally smell the chlorine, and it's been increased in our water by (4x). In terms of toxicity, Our water quality has been chemically rendered worse than that of Venice Italy... "They Stick to Bottled Wine there... Me, I've gone over to straight "steam distilled spring water" Why ? Because the spring water has no chlorine / fluoride to start with, and it's my understanding that small amounts of that crap can get through the distilling process. This water is also the best to make C.S. with period. But... buy a PPM meter or a TDS meter http://www.silvergen.com/ppm.htm , and make sure the water reads @ only @ 3ppm at the most, or the stuff is not Kosher. A lot of jerks are pouring tap water into bottles these days, and selling it as spring water / distilled water... Distilled water is the only water you can verify with the meters, as you'll have to by a swimming pool testing kit to check for chlorine levels... Personally, I use a C.S. machine, that will shut off if the water is not distilled grade ppm... But... a lot of the manual-type units will go ahead and try to produce C.S. with tap-water Silver-chloride is the result, not C.S. Also, if you are getting into the use of C.S., I strongly recommend that you read up on the: BECK PROTOCOL...
