The homeostatic mechanisms would maintain a narrow range of blood levels. Aldosterone is the kidney hormone that regulates how much of a mineral is excreted or retained with each pass of blood through the kidneys. Some minerals like Magnesium are also excreted in feces.
An excess of dietary potassium will have a diuretic effect, of Magnesium will cause diarrhea. You are much less likely to ingest excessive amounts of a mineral in your diet, than as a supplement. Supplements are also in a metallic form so are harder on the body to excrete the excess. Food based minerals are in a matrix of other nutrients, easier to digest, absorp and utilize for the most part. Although there are exceptions to this, as in the chelation of Iron by oxalic acid in spinach making the Iron less bioavailable. Garnet On Mon, 2004-03-08 at 07:06, M. G.
