If I recall, Ponds and Fleishman never claimed "cold fusion". They never had a clue why what they did worked. What happened is that the people who were checking the phenomenon out "tagged" the process as cold fusion so they could look in the wrong places for confirmation.
The person [ James Patterson?] who invented microspheres used extensively in the drug and cosmetic industry now which made him a millionaire, replicated the "cold fusion" process using plated microbeads in circulating salt water. Last I heard a few years back, he had a water heater on the market and was selling researchers kits. Humm.... Time to check back in... I'd expect these folks to be publishing in referreed journals later on this year if these results are in fact real. Still, I can't help to think that _any_ serious professional(and these guys are both serious respectable professionals) would be awful careful about going public about this stuff after all the hoopla in the press and the exile of Pons and Fleishman.
