If I recall correctly silver nitrate was used extensively until the drug cartel
convinced the hospitals to use their patent medicines instead since silver
nitrate
was too cheap.

The result was some cases in which antibiotic resistant gonerriah was not
killed,
and a baby would go blind. A number of hospitals got sued big time over that,
the argument being that they intentionally replaced something that worked 100%
of
the time with something that did not work 100% of the time for no good reason
except the antibiotic cost more. At least one of the lawsuits resulted in a
major
settlement against a hospital around here.

So some hospitals have switched back to silver nitrate from what I understand,
and
both are now used.
