Propylene glycol is used as an anti-freeze in liquid heat transfer systems where there is the possibility of leakage into potable water, such as solar hot water heaters.

It is not anti-freeze although in sufficient quantities it causes CNS depression. Ethylene Glycol is anti-freeze and will kill dogs and cats, they drink it because it is sweet. Does not take much. There are safe alternatives for those who do not want to risk a leak around their pets.
