Propylene glycol is used as an anti-freeze in liquid heat transfer systems
where there is the possibility of leakage into potable water, such as solar
hot water heaters.

Propylene glycol is in ice cream and other foods. It is not anti-freeze
although in sufficient quantities it causes CNS depression. Ethylene Glycol
is anti-freeze and will kill dogs and cats, they drink it because it is
sweet. Does not take much. There are safe alternatives for those who do not
want to risk a leak around their pets.
