I too am impressed with the effects of even low concentrations of DMSO. Stem cells are preserved in less than 4% solutions. It is often thought that if some is good more is better -- and this is often not true. But in our haste achieve fast and good results we may overlook the wisdom of "dosing to effect".
How would you know is a good question and would vary with the situation. Using enough to achieve an effect and then trying more comes to mind, but that is so general as to not be of much specific help. If you are dealing with a sensitive tissue it makes sense to start with the lowest effective dosage "range". When I have a situation that needs immediate relief I tend to go with higher doses of what ever I am using because my perception is that I do not have time to work out the lowest effective dose. By accident I have discovered that 20% DMSO, for instance, will treat trauma as effectively as 99%, but I compressed the area for 20 minutes, it was not a one time slap it on application, as most of us are more likely to employ, due to our impatience and time constraints. I use my intuition or judgement as some prefer to call it, as to what dose of something is called for. Not scientific in the strict sense of the term, but it works for me and many others. It is a blend of what I know analytically and what I intuit from all sources of knowledge (what ever they may be). Hunches don't sound very scientific or reliable yet much good science has come from hunches and serendipitous discoveries. Being in the process of healing works better than analyzing the information mentally to try and work out the answer, since mentally we can not encompass all the parameters involved. Experience is the best teacher. That said I have rarely had a situation that benefited from doses of DMSO much over 30%, but to limit all these situations to 10% I find is to limit the benefits of the therapy. I could however be wrong and until more information is known no one can actually say what the optimal doses are.
