Hi Shirley: Worms and Viruses can not destroy a hard drive, they can only manipulate the data on it. Yes, they can render a system inoperable or nearly so and yes it can be a real chore to remove. Most machines that I have worked on that are badly infected usually take about 2 hours to fully remove trojans and viruses. Depending upon how many programs you would have to reinstall, sometimes it is easier to reformat the drive and install windows over again. But if you are looking at 10-12 hours to reinstall everything and back lup your data etc., 2 hours is a gift of time.
Sometimes people do not do regular maintenance on their drives. I ask them when they defragmented their drive last and they look at me and say "What's defragmenting". A drive left alone will eventually become almost impossible to operate if not cared for. Hope this helps.
