I spent some time researching this a while back: 1. Studies do not show that routine mammography reduces mortality - http://www.diagnosticimaging.com/dinews/2002090501.shtml . 2. Exposing our bodies to excess ionising radiation should be avoided unless absolutely necessary - common sense. 3. Squeezing a cancerous breast between metal plates increases risk of metastasis if there is a tumour present. 4. There are perfectly safe alternatives such as thermography that do not involves ionising radiation nor squeezing possibly diseased breasts between metal plates - see http://www.healpain.net/articles/mammog.html for example.
Also check out a sample chapter from a book by two doctors here: http://www.johnleemd.net/books/breast_cancer_chp1.html . One day I am sure we will look back in horror at the days when we deliberately exposed healthy people to ionising radiation when it was not absolutely necessary. Also, check out the facts about radiation, as established by Dr John Gofman, here: http://www.ratical.org/radiation/NGP/DrJohnGofman.html .
