I use 20% DMSO and ~10 ppm CS topically on fever blisters (herpes simplex). DMSO alone will help shingles but with the CS it will rapidly deactivate the virus.
DMSO can cause histamine release and some transient itching until the histamine stores in the area are depleted. Just keep the concentration low initially to avoid this and apply more often. You can lay a cloth over the area and saturate with the solution leaving it on for as long as desired. It really helps having the DMSO in there. Check feed stores and vet offices for DMSO. If you must tell them it is for a horse's muscle soreness. www.jeffersequine.com has it as well as www.jacoblalb.com - the latter sells a low odor product that does not have the garlic smell of most DMSO. I don't find it too objectionable but some people are more sensitive. DMSO and CS can also be taken orally mixed together. 1-2 teaspoons is an average dose. I have done this when sick and it enhanced the CS oral quite a bit. Can also be energizing, but may give a short funny sort of headache because DMSO is a vasodilator -- does not last more than about 10 min and is just a slight pain. I mix it with Pepsi or Coke to disguise the taste. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DimethylSulfoxide-DMSO is a discussion group I started last Spring. Search the archives for discussions on Shingles and other Herpes species.
