The standard normal blood pressure was 120/80. High blood pressure was over
140/90. The more important of the two numbers is the lower one, the
diastolic blood pressure, since that is the pressure when the heart is at
rest in the contraction cycle. The upper number, the systolic blood
pressure, fluctuates in response to activity and stress, and even time of
day.... the more important number to focus on is the diastolic, ideally it
should be below 90.
If someone's blood pressure appears to be high, several other blood pressure
measurements should be taken at different times of day (this can really make
a difference) before one can conclude he or she definitely has high blood
pressure.
I don't recall what's been in the media lately as far as lower numbers for
normal, but yeah, I'd also be very suspicious that it was related to selling
more drugs. Which, incidentally, a clinical research trial called ALLHAT
demonstrated that one of the older and cheaper drugs, a diuretic called
furosemide (brand name Lasix) was as or more effective in controlling blood
pressure with minimal side effects compared to high-priced brand name drugs.
I do believe that profit motivated the recent revisions in cholesterol
numbers, lowering them even further... the numbers they're claiming now
should be the target goals are higher than something like 3/4 of the
population...and they're even targeting children for putting them on statin
drugs... but don't even get me going on that, because I'm convinced now
mainstream medicine is totally wrong about cholesterol and heart disease. I
just brought it up to underscore that Big Medicine is definitely looking out
for their profits.
Everyone ought to read "Overdosed America"... it goes into that a lot, as
well as how many medical diagnostic tests & procedures (like bone
densitometry to measure bone density and cardiac catheterizations) are not
as important or useful as we've been told (for example, the survival rates
for people undergoing cardiac catheterization aren't any better than those
who opt against the procedure)..it's a real eye-opener, one of those books I
wish everyone would read.

Since we are on the subject of heart disease I wanted
to bring up something I just recently read about. I am
not sure what used to be classified as "high blood
pressure" but I read a report stating that they have
lowered the readings for high blood pressure. 140 top
number is now classified as in the high range and it
formerly was not. I do not know what the former range
was.Does anyone know? The reason(according to the
article) for lowering the numbers is to prescribe more
blood pressure meds to people for monetary reasons. I
think that these drugs have some very bad side effects
and I would want to try alternative things first. Is
there a reason why the fda would outlaw Red Yeast if
it helps? Is this for monetary reasons as well?
