Yes, but I don't necessarily agree. Ice describes a frozen substance, it can be anything that is normally liquid OR gas (like CO2 is dry ice) at room temperature, so an ice crystal does not convey that we are talking specifically specifically water. A water crystal would define it as water, and as frozen both, and thus is completely unambiguous. So I can see a reason for calling it that. Why he did it though, I don't really know.
