Hi Mike-- My concern is the type of metals used in these appliances as I worry about the chance of heavy metals getting into our kids' systems. (though I doubt most of us parents with children having this hardware in their mouths have much of a choice.) I haven't done much research into this, but I should, as my son will be getting braces in a year or so. (He has headgear and brackets at present.) I to find out what kind of metal is used, and if it is known to give off vapors, I would like the chance to choose an alternative, like I did with his fillings. They look at my like I've lost my mind, but I face that with X-ray and fluoride issues. Of course, anything not customary and ordinary insurance companies don't like to pay for.
