>So I made a batch of CS last night. It was the first
time I'd "seeded". What I got after a two hour brew
time with my two-nines set up was a definite yellow
color. I didn't care for the looks of it so I added a
few drops of H2O2, which made it quite cloudy. So now
I have this nasty, cloudy yellow batch that I am not
comfortable drinking and will put it in the cleaning
bottle. What did I do wrong, and how do I prevent it
in the future?<
Basically, you just overcooked it, until it was
yellow. You dont need to brew it as long when you
seed it. The amount you seed it determines how much
the brewing time is reduced. If 1/4 of the batch is CS
and 3/4 DW, it reduces the brewing time by 2/3 (from 2
hours with only water to 40 minutes with CS added as
starter). However long it took you to brew that batch,
just reduce your brewing time by 10 minutes and try
again. If it is still yellow, reduce it another 10
minutes each batch until you get a clear batch. Make
sure your jar is scrubbed out with hot water and a
nylon pot scubber (no soap) to prevent contamination.
Most of the time, when I try adding H2O2 to CS, it
turns cloudy, I dont know why, yet sometimes it turns
yellow to clear.
Although this is not a big part of it, the temperature
of the room can affect your brewing time. The room I
brew in is warmer during the summer and much cooler
during the winter. During the winter I brew 10-gallons
in about 70 minutes, but during the summer, I reduce
it to about 50 minutes. If I don't do this, I
sometimes get yellow CS (which I and my family drink).
This shows me that I am brewing it as long as I can
and still get crystal clear CS.
The only reason to avoid yellow CS is because yellow
CS means your silver wires are being used up quicker
than they need to. Yellow CS is not more effective
than clear (unless it is clear because it has barely
been brewed).
By-the-way, theres nothing wrong with that CS. All it
is, is CS with H2O2. I have drunk many, many gallons
of CS that looks like that over the years.
