In his day, Pauling created a good deal of controversy by fulfilling his
perceived obligation to apply scientific knowledge to public safety. He
recalled an early manifestation of government suspicion: "A couple of days
after my talk, there was a man in my office from the FBI saying, 'Who told
you how much plutonium there is in an atomic bomb?' And I said, 'Nobody
told
me. I figured it out.'" ............. Some go so far as to say that
vitamin
C is carcinogenic in large quantities, and that Pauling has no truly
scientific basis for his advocacy. Pauling, in turn, contended that his
only
opponents were doctors whose livelihood depended on pharmaceutical sales
in
"the sickness industry"-Pauling's name for medicine in the United States.
........ Linus Pauling was diagnosed with cancer in 1991, and died August
19, 1994, at his ranch in Big Sur, California. In addition to work that
has
permanently improved the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, and peace
activism, he leaves a simple statement of resounding encouragement to his
admirers: "You can contribute, and you can't be sure how great your
contribution is, but you can contribute, so do it."

PAULING: Oh yes! I think that the public as a whole responded better to
the
statements that Cameron and I or Hoffer and I were making than the medical
establishment. Ten years ago people were telling me, "I told my doctor I
was
taking a gram of vitamin C per day or three grams of vitamin C per day and
he said 'You mustn't do that, that'll kill you, those vitamins are
poisonous.'" Five years ago people began reporting to me, "I told the
doctor
I was taking several grams of vitamin C per day and he said, 'Well, that
won't hurt you. Go ahead if you want to. It probably won't do any good.
But
if you want to take it, go ahead.'" Today, of course, doctors are apt to
say "That's fine, perhaps it is doing good for you," especially when the
patient shows up in much better shape than the doctor had expected and
says,
"I think the reason is high doses of vitamin C and vitamin E and so on
that
I've been taking." Doctors tend to agree with that point of view now. I
don't know to what extent doctors take the initiative in prescribing
vitamins for their seriously ill patients. But I think many of them are at
least open to it now. ........ I think it's likely that the future
generations will think of me as the "vitamin C man." And of course I don't
think of myself in that way. For 20 years I've just been repeating
statements that Stone, and to some extent Szent-Gyorgyi himself, had made
about the great value of high doses of vitamin C and other vitamins. But
Szent-Gyorgyi, who discovered vitamin C and first isolated it in 1927, was
not a very vigorous advocate of megavitamins. Hoffer and Humphrey Osmond,
M.D., much later became the principal advocates of high doses of vitamin C
and niacin for schizophrenic patients--doses that were 500 or 1,000 times
as
great as the RDA.12 And I was much impressed by what Hoffer and Osmond
wrote, as well as by Stone's analysis of the situation with respect to
vitamin C.
http://members.aol.com/realmedia/pauling.html Pauling's last interview
It is interesting to speculate what further discoveries Pauling might have
made had he not been deflected from his goals by shortsighted,
self-serving,
mercenary, or jealous opponents. He never, however, became embittered. In
one of his last interviews (April 1, 1994), in response to our question as
to how he was able to retain his positive outlook on life, he told us, "I
suppose it's partially genetic ... actually the result of my having been
pretty successful in my own career, and, of course, my feeling that we
ought
to be smart enough, we human beings, to solve our problems, whatever they
are."

Finally, after he had said the Mayo Clinic has shown that vitamin C has no
value in the treatment of cancer, I said that Mayo Clinic study was a
fraud.
And I can explain just how. The Mayo Clinic people didn't follow the
procedure that Dr. Ewan Cameron used at all. They say that they did, but
they didn't. We know that they didn't. So you can't rely on that. Finally,
he became interested. .......... And I have gotten hundreds of letters
from
people, including physicians, asking for more information about vitamin C
for controlling cancer, but also sending information about how long they
have been able to control their cancer by taking perhaps 36 grams a day,
day
after day. Or in the case of this one man, a chemist in San Jose working
for
IBM, taking 130 grams a day. ........ I wasn't the first to say it
either.
Other people had been advocating vitamin C for controlling the common cold
and cancer and other diseases back starting 50 years ago. I do feel
satisfaction in thinking that I have been able to contribute to this, what
I
think is a great step forward in the control of disease and the decrease
in
the amount of suffering. ........ The more LPA you have in your blood, the
more chance there is of dying of cardiovascular disease. The more vitamin
C
you are taking, the less LPA in the blood. And it has been known for years
that people with low vitamin C levels in the blood have a higher death
rate
from cardiovascular disease that those with a high level. So Dr. Wrath and
I
are right now putting the finishing touches on a paper in which we say
essentially that cardiovascular disease is caused by a low intake of
vitamin
C http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/pau0int-7
I have said I don't like anybody to tell me what to do or to think, except
Mrs. Pauling. I ran across that statement in some testimony I was giving
before a Senate committee. I said, "Nobody tells me what to think, except
Mrs. Pauling." http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/pau0int-4
I don't think that there are many skeptics in the scientific community.
Scientists know me from way back. They are in a position to appreciate the
significance of anything that I say. It is the MD's -- the physicians --
that constitute the problem, with a few exceptions. A few oddball
scientists
say that I am wrong. It is mainly just the medical establishment that
supplies the opposition to orthomolecular medicine. ......... I knew a
man
who took 130,000 milligrams of vitamin C a day for 13 years to control his
cancer -- that's a quarter of a pound of vitamin C a day -- so he wouldn't
need to eat so much starch. He could rely to some extent on burning the
vitamin C in the cells of his body to provide energy, as well as
controlling
the cancer. I take 300 times the RDA of vitamin C per day. I have been
doing
that for years. http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/pau0int-6
At the Institute's laboratories in Palo Alto, scientists conducted
research
in molecular and viral carcinogenesis, cancer metastasis, genetics, aging,
neurotoxicology, immunology, and the roles of vitamin C and other
micronutrients in human physiology, cancer, cataract, infectious diseases,
heart disease, and other pathologies. Pauling also continued his research
in
theoretical physics and chemistry, including studies in the bonding of
metals and intermetallic compounds, chemical structure, the structure of
atomic nuclei, and superconductivity.
