Those would have been ground yellow jackets, hornets build paper nests up
high.  Ground yellow jackets are about the meanest insects around.  We have
had them kill several people around here, usually by crawling  into a can
of pop then stinging the person in the throat when they drink it.  I always
drink canned drinks by straining it through my teeth when outside for that
reason.  Best way to get rid of them is to pour gasoline into the hole and
light it. Actually both holes, they almost always have a back entrance
which I found out the first time I tried it.
