Ed, I'm a complete dope and have made CS using less sophiticated machines that are widely mentioned on this list like the silver puppy or the silvergen. Just get a unit and basically follow the directions. If worse comes to worse, you can always ask someone experienced to make some for you and pay them for it until you feel more confident to make your own. But really, CS making is a no brainer, thanks to people like those on this list.
