As stated here many times, argyria is a multi step process based on the photographic process. If you have a high content of silver salts in your blood, and are exposed to the sun, some of the silver salts will reduce to silver atoms, and with a high level of silver salts in the blood with the developing agents that can be present in the blood, these atoms can get plated out on by more silver until the particles grow in size to an extent that they gets lodged in the tissues. So there are many things at play here:
1. silver salts must be present in the skin to be photoreduced and uv light must be present to do the reduction. 2. sufficient silver salts must be present so that the reduced silver grows rapidly enough that it becomes lodged in the tissues So basically if you have high silver salts for a period of time, and you are in the dark you are ok, and if you are in the sun but the silver salts are at a low enough concentration that any photoreduced particles are flushed out of the skin before they can grow to a large size that gets stuck you are ok. However note that if you have already photoreduced particles stuck in your skin, then ANY silver compounds in your blood will then to make them grow, sunlight or not! That is why if a person has early stages of argyria, it can be aggravated even with EIS, it is important to never get the seed particles in the skin. Although EIS with a 5% or greater particle concentration has as far as I know never caused the condition (fingernails notwithstanding), high concentrations with high ppm of silver salts and low concentration of particles can cause it because there are insufficient particles to prevent it (that is act like a sponge and reduce the silver salts before they can reduce in the skin). I highly recommend to never take EIS in excess of 20 or so ppm. Since you have to have light and silver compounds to form seed particles, then taking silver before you go to bed should be less likely to cause any problems than taking it in the morning. I hope this helps explain why the sun is needed, as well as lower dosages of EIS are harmless.
