Interesting that Dr. Robert O. Becker proposed a crystalline origin of life which somewhat later was clad in protein, in his book Body Electric, which was published I think in 1985. He said it was the most probable because it provides the necessary structure, the mechanism to self repair, and a variable current carrying ability are built in properties, or words to that effect.
