The off color is not likely to be the silver.
It's much more likely to be a complete lack of current and PPM controls
along with variances in the water quality and addition of contaminants
before, during or after making the CS... possibly from the filter.
Any number of environmental elements can trigger a cascade reaction after
some threshold has been reached.
A timer cannot work to predict PPM unless the water and water
temperature...and several other interdependent factors... are always the
same. They almost never are and the tiniest trace of something can throw
things way off, even a fingerprint after eating something odd on the wrong day.
That's not to say that usable, sometimes even very good, CS can't be made
that way. It is to say that doing so is a crap shoot from batch to
batch. Results will vary, sometimes wildly.
A good eye, a few instruments to monitor progress and close observation
will, of course, increase the odds of a nice batch and consistency between
batches.
Skill always helps luck along...or, you can constantly and automatically
"control" progress electronically.
Even then, luck counts some as there are uncontrollable/unpredictable
environment variations to consider.
For instance: A single grain of salt makes a big difference in a cup of
water. How much salt is blowing in the wind today?
Which sweaty finger touched that electrode or jar? What sort of acid is
on your skin this time after eating asparagus?

Are you straining it? It should be clear to a yellow or golden color. I
use ordinary coffee filters doubled to strain mine through. You should
also be using the purest silver rods you can get. Sometimes if they're
not as pure, you'll get off color CS. That's happened to me before...cheryl
