Good point here, and these should really be out of distribution, if
they are non-GPL.

Not so here. Noone can forbid you (at least in non-DMCA countries,
US _might_ be another matter) to create alternative clients. Even
reverse-engineering is legal in most countries. Maybe some networks don't
allow _usage_ of alternative clients in their EULAs, but that's on user
conscience whether they want to break that particular EULA directive. However,
noone can be prevented from developing and distributing alternative clients.
